for computers

Cable Cover

When setting up your computer to be wireless, we still have to connect a computer to the phone socket to access the internet.  As the computer is rarely situated near a phone outlet, we end up with a phone cable running around our skirting boards.  After trying blu tac and glue to hide it, I found this great little product in Bunnings.  It’s in the electrical section and it’s called Cable Cover (D line white adhesive cover.  2m cost $10.97).

With a self adhesive strip, it sticks to your wall and the front opens up so you can insert the cable and then clicks shut.  You can saw it to fit your walls.  As you can see by the photo above, I need to go and buy another strip to finish the wall, but after looking at this ugly cable for over a year, this strip is so neat it only took me about 5 minutes.

Backing up computers

We all rely on our computers so much these days, not only for work, but school work, assignments and most importantly photos.  How often do you back your hard-drive up?  Probably never.

Here is a great gadget that is easy to use and cheap.  It also makes your data/photos transportable.
USB Portable Hard Disk Drive. For around $100 you can purchase these from any computer/stationery outlet.  They’re smaller than the average wallet and vary in storage capacity, so have a look.
Of course, once you’ve backed-up your computer, store this in a different location.  i.e. not next to the computer.

How many on-line passwords do you have?

If you’re like us, it’s not always possible to use the same user-id and password to join up to something and you end up with so many combinations of the same few words ~ which of course you can never remember.

In your In-box, create a folder called PASSWORDS.

When you sign up to something, send yourself an email with the User-ID and password and in the subject line, type the name of what you’re joining.

Then when it arrives, file it into your password folder and you’ll always have them on-hand when you’re on-line.

Obviously, you wouldn’t keep sensitive/financial passwords on your computer for security reasons, just general internet sign up passwords.

Create a slide show of your photos

Most people have their photos stored in the “my pictures” file on their computer, if so, to view them as a slide show throughout the day you need to have them as your “screen saver”. To do this follow these steps.

Go to the “control panel” on your computer, then click on “display”, then “screen saver”, then “my pictures slide show”.

You can either select what photos are on the slide show or it will just  scroll through all the photos that are stored in your “my pictures” file.

This way, every time you walk past your computer you can have a giggle or maybe just enjoy seeing a photo you haven’t seen for a long time.
