my digital photos

We all have 100′s of digital photos on our computers but why you should take the time to sort and file your digital photos?

·          it’s quicker to scroll through them when you’re looking for a particular photo
·         it makes backing up a lot quicker and easier
·         down loading future photos onto your computer will be more organised.

This takes a bit of time to set up, but once it’s in place, it will make the filing of your digital photos (and retrieval) a thousand times faster.

  • First you need to create a FOLDER for every year you have digital photos e.g. 2006,  2007,  2008
  • Then move (click & drag) all your photos to the corresponding folder
  • Then within the year folder, you need to label your folders

How to label your folders

Ideally you want your folders to list in month order i.e. January to December.   As computers list folders either alphabetically or numerically, you need to label them with a number as well as the month – as follows:

  1. Jan 2008
  2. Feb 2008
  3. Mar 2008

For an even better labelling system, you can add more information like the event the photos were of, or if they were of your daughter or son add their name, so they can find their photos easily:

  1. Jan 2008 – Qld holiday
  2. Feb 2008 – Dance Concert – Imogen
  3. Mar 2008 – Girls’ weekend – Tricia
  4. Apr 2008 – Easter holidays…

If in Feb you have soccer photos of your son, simply name that folder 2.  Feb 2008 – Soccer – Cameron.  The computer will still list it with the other Feb folder.  By having the folders listed in month order, it’s easier to go back and find photos.

Also by having the year in one folder, you can easily copy this folder to a disc to have a back-up of your photos and you can also copy the disc to put in a file for each of your children so they have a complete set of photos (for that glorious day when they leave home or their 21st).

You can always email us if you’re not sure how to create and move within your folders.
